Michael Engle, assistant professor in the Learning Assistance Center and Testing Office, has published “Diners of the Great Lakes,” a book which looks at the history of the diner and diner manufacturing in the Great Lakes region in the 20th century.
Much of the book’s focus is on the manufacturing history of diners between 1920 and 1950 on the shores of Lake Erie, but it does expand to all of the Great Lakes. The book is the culmination of more than 15 years of research on the subject. When many commercial historians think about diners, they think about New England and New Jersey, but there is a rich history on the shores of the Great Lakes when it comes to diners. The book is available from the author (m.engle@hvcc.edu) for $25.
